Making your gym clothes last longer.

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

Making your gym clothes last longer helps you save money and can also reduce waste. Here are six eco-friendly ways to extend the lifespan of your gym clothes:

  1. Wash with care: Follow the care instructions on the garment's label and use cold water whenever possible. Avoid fabric softeners and harsh detergents, as they can degrade the fabric. Instead, opt for gentle, eco-friendly detergents specifically designed for sportswear.

  2. Air dry: Skip the dryer and air dry your gym clothes instead. The high heat from dryers can damage the elasticity and fibres of the fabric. Hang your clothes or lay them flat on a clean surface to dry naturally. If you need them to dry quickly, try using a clothesline or drying rack.

  3. Spot treat stains: Treat stains promptly to avoid excessive washing. Use eco-friendly stain removers or natural alternatives like baking soda, vinegar, or lemon juice. Gently blot the stained area and rinse with cold water before washing the entire garment if necessary.

  4. Use a laundry bag: Protect your gym clothes by washing them in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase. Helping to prevent friction and reduces the chances of snags or stretching. It also helps to separate gym clothes from other laundry items from items with zips or hooks that could damage the fabric.

  5. Rotate your workout attire: Regularly rotating your gym clothes reduces wear and tear. Alternate between multiple sets of workout attire, giving each outfit a chance to rest between uses, which allows sweat and odours to fully dissipate before wearing the clothes again.

  6. Mend and repair: Don't toss out gym clothes at the first sign of damage. Extend their life by mending small tears, loose hems, or separated seams. You can try sewing them yourself or take them to a local tailor or Seamstress for repairs. By repairing instead of replacing, you reduce waste and maximize the use of your clothing.

Remember: investing in high-quality gym clothes made from durable and sustainable materials can also contribute to longevity. By implementing these eco-friendly practices, you can enjoy your gym clothes for an extended period while minimizing their environmental impact.
